Lizard dreaming

This morning I was at the bottom of the hill having just entered the ‘misted lands’.  As I walked on I noticed the path underfoot alter.  It was no longer the soft, yielding earth beneath my feet, but felt hard, harsh – at first just the odd few pebbles, gradually becoming completely stone.  I continued.  The path led onto a bridge.  How curious.  There was no river, no chasm, no ravine, nothing which required a bridge to cross it, but, nevertheless, it was definitely a bridge.  A bridge built from very, very old stone by the look of it.

Standing on the bridge I looked around.  Lazing on the wall of the bridge was a brightly coloured lizard basking in the sun.

“Wait a minute – in the sun!!  I am under the mists, how come the sun is still shining here and, and, why a bridge where none is needed?”

I felt as if I were mentally free-falling.

“What makes you think the bridge is not needed?” says a voice.

Startled I looked around but I couldn’t see anyone.

“Are you hiding – show yourself?” I called.

“No, I am right in front of you”.

The only ‘one’ around was Lizard.

I looked at Lizard and said: “I can see it is embedded in the earth, there is no river to cross, no break in the land.”

“Bridges are built for many reasons” says Lizard.

Yes, yes Lizard spoke – I saw it with my own eyes –  I know I did, and an enigmatic Lizard at that, just what I needed!

“Wait a minute,” says I, with just a hint of panic in my voice, “How come you can talk?”

“How come you can talk?” Lizard responds, “ and why are you bothering to cross a bridge that you deem unnecessary, a bridge without a function?”

“At this moment in time” , I sighed deeply, “I have no idea.”

Lizard closed his eyes and smiled broadly.

I expected him to disappear leaving only his smile, but he didn’t.  He shifted his position a little.

“Would you like me to show you the way?”, Lizard asked.

“The way to where?”

“The way to where you are going.”

I didn’t know what to think or feel, I wasn’t sure I could trust my senses any more.

“Sit and relax a while”, says Lizard, “have something to eat , there is no rush, all is well.”

Apparently there is a settlement not far ahead and Lizard will guide me there.

What a beautiful way to start Willow’s adventure. I love the bridge metaphor. Looking forward to what is next.
